I would assume the value of the land was derived from the lowered income capacities due to the Canola pricing...
Hopefully, they can turn it back to the market as a normal farmland and have a farmer grow whatever other crops... Corn, wheat, patatoes, whatever. Other than to have to value attached to the lower price of Canola and, as you stated, claim the difference as income.
Here's to hoping, at least.
