Battery news--why not RAM!

Battery news--why not RAM! Looks like the big companies are into batteries--unfortunately Lithium for now: (P.S. I had to leave out the "t" in the Matsushi_a or it's considered profane!) Sanyo, Matsushi_a to boost lithium battery production By Bloomberg News January 5, 2001, 9:40 a.m. PT OSAKA, Japan--Sanyo Electric and Matsushi_a Battery Industrial will invest more than $86.5 million to increase production of rechargeable lithium batteries. Demand is growing for rechargeable lithium batteries used in cell phones and handheld computers. Japan's production of such batteries is expected to reach 650 million units in 12 months ending in March 2002, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported. Osaka-based Sanyo Electric, Japan's biggest maker of rechargeable lithium batteries, will boost annual production at two plants in Japan to 20 million units from current capacity of 15 million units by March, the newspaper said without citing sources. The company also plans to start making the batteries in Hungary, Mexico and China by early 2002, the newspaper said. Matsushi_a Battery will add three production lines at a factory in Japan by March and five to six more lines within the next year, the paper said. The new lines are expected to boost production capacity to 20 million units per month, the paper said. Sony will start making lithium polymer batteries at its subsidiary in Fukushima, Japan, and at its plant in Mexico by this spring, the paper said.
