There are three positions
1.Short-wants it to go down
2.Cash-does not want to paricipate in either direction
3. Long -wants it to go up
You are claiming that because I sold, its essentially a short. That is not correct.
If one uses stretched reasoning like that, you could say that my selling was actually a long play, because now I will have to rebuy and push up the share price. So I'd be feeding into the long frenzy, that would benefit my new long position. Also not correct.
The point is, is that cash is not a short or long, its a unique position.
I don't know if that make sense :)
