Cancer is not really an apt comparison since it is not generally communicable.
One used to be able to smoke anywhere they wanted, but that has changed in most of the world.. If social distancing reduced the spread of cancer do you not think that it would be enacted. How much is spent each year for cancer research? Its hardly neglected as you suggest. The naysayers are at least more genuine when using Influenza comparisons.
Whether they were right or wrong will be debated, but one will never really know, too many variables.
