ROC can result when a fund returns the non-taxable portion of capital gains it has generated in managing the funds investments to investors. The fund is a trust and generally applies its expenses against those types of income (i.e., interest) that are taxed at the highest tax rates, leaving the remaining lower taxed forms of income (i.e., taxable capital gains and ROC) for distribution to unit holders.
