Originally a day to honour Queen Victoria queen of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland and Empress of India. At that time the British Colonies including Canada were also under her rule.
Full name Alexandrina Victoria of the house of Hanover.
She was named Alexandrina after one of her godparents, Emperor Alexander I of Russia, and Victoria, after her mother.
She took the throne at age 18 in 1837 and died in 1901 in the 63rd year of her reign.
Martin Van Buren was president at the time of Victoria's coronation and received a letter from the new Queen which she signed "Your good friend, Victoria R."
Victoria ruled during the rule of 17 American presidents–the last being William McKinley.
