Despite priorization of cases to best efforts, one thing remains a reality; availability of operating rooms and staff (surgeons, nurses, ...) that go with them. A bit like the rush hours. You have an influx of more cars but cannot have more roads. You suddenly have a bottleneck and it gets more infernal when accesses are blocked by another accident. So it will take some time to come back to reality, as per this article that mentions PMCC. It will remain a challenge even though they're all doining their best.
Same story and reality check, for any hospitals, no matter the country.
I have been worried about this for the entire pandemic. It will take 3x4 times as long to catch up. And the extra workload of working a few extra cases a day and probably extending hours into weekends will lead to burnout with staff and contribute to iatrogenic complications and error.
The healthcare sector took the brunt of the stress of this pandemic and will also be the ones that need to do the extra work to get caught up. Resilience will be an important concept
