New capital resources, for the construction, assembly and start-up of production of gold and copper mining projects, estimated at 5,000 million dollars, just over 18.8 billion pesos for the next four years, is the bet that The mining sector is ready to promote the reactivation of the country after the coronavirus pandemic.

This was stated by the Colombian Mining Association (ACM), when taking stock of the impact on activity due to sanitary measures, indicating that these resources will allow the sector to raise its share of GDP, going from 1.84 percent to 2 , 6 percent.

Juan Camilo Nario, president of the ACM, explained that it is the projects of Continental Gold, which is finishing the construction phase of the Gramalote initiative in San Roque, Antioquia, to extract gold, together with the gold projects of Minesa in California and Surat, Santander; Quebradona (copper in Jericho), Antioquia, in charge of Anglogold Ashanti, and an initiative in Marmato, Caldas, with whichThey can generate 28,000 direct and indirect jobs, plus taxes and royalties per year for some 700,000 million pesos. The last three are in their licensing phase and, according to the union's estimates, they would not only bring their investment and tax contribution to the country, but would also allow Colombia to finally be included in the global discussions of the markets of gold and copper, since in about three years the country's production can go from 1.18 million ounces to 2.62 million ounces.

"They are mining investments with a high industrial percentage for the associated plants to process these minerals, and to extract the concentrates, with modern and efficient complexes of the best qualities," said the union leader. In turn, in the case of copper, the jump would be much larger, going from 7.6 million tons in 2019 to 242 million tons in three years.

“Mining is essential if a cleaner world is required. There is no electric car, wind turbine, or solar panel that does not have mining developments behind it. If we want a more balanced energy matrix, we must support copper mining, "he added.
