Expensive costs to lay off employees following an article: Globe says Bombardier doesn't expect jobs to return 2020-06-08 08:40 ET - In the News
The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Bombardier is laying off 2,500 people in its aviation division, including about 1,900 people in Ontario and Quebec, as the company slashes jobs in anticipation of reduced demand for business jets. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that the job losses announced Friday include 1,500 people in Dorval and St. Laurent, Que., 400 at Bombardier's Downsview factory in Toronto, and cuts in the United States and Mexico. The cuts are permanent and will take place through 2020. Bombardier said it will take a $40-million charge as a result. Bombardier Aviation employs 22,000 worldwide -- including 12,500 in Canada -- making Learjet, Challenger and Global business aircraft. Bombardier placed about 10,000 of its Canadian employees on federal wage subsidies of 75 per cent between March and June. As the company resumes production, however, it is adjusting its work force to meet an anticipated 30-per-cent drop in demand for aircraft. "Given that we have a clear picture of how the market is shaping up and a clear picture of how we have to adjust ourselves, we do want to start sizing our company to be ready for that time in the marketplace," Bombardier's Mark Masluch told The Globe.
