Just 95.5% (definition of battery grade), purity is not enough for battery makers.
They have their raw material specifications and are willing to pay the price.
Long term contracts, even today, at about $10-12/kg.
ORE gets $5-6/kg

Refining is tedious and costly and there's insufficient capacity for future needs.
Currently little investment in high quality product, supply chain is likely to fail EV OEM's

By the way military are in process to change acid batteries for their tanks and other vehicles. This is interesting development. First of all it shows how safe and reliable Li batteries, second, military started many trends, when ICE cars will start changing acid batteries to Li, the demand will grow much faster.
