As a non-institutional trader working on my personal brokerage account, I have access to a limited number of order types.  Market Order, Limit Order, Stop Loss, Stop Limit, Trailing Stops, and so on.

Brokers have access to at least (my information is dated) 20 additional order types that I do not.  Yes, some of them involve putting in bids that will not execute (expire or killed) even when the bid is hit.

So these are games I can't win unless I go back to the institutional trading floor.  The game is not structured so that I can "defeat" an enemy with weapons that are far superior to mine.
