This position will be responsible for contributing to the success of MEG Energy’s SAGD operation by applying your technical design, operational troubleshooting, and economic evaluation experience and expertise in the operation of SAGD plant facilities.   This role will have a focus on optimizing the facilities using a data analysis and control system optimization approach.

This position works closely with the both Site and Calgary based engineers and operations specialist/coordinators as well as plant operators.  You will also have a close working relationship with the controls engineers and DCS technicians.

Safety is of primary importance in all you do, and you will be expected to provide and demonstrate personal Safety leadership in accordance with MEG Energy Corp’s Environment Health and Safety Program.

Providing and demonstrating personal leadership in supporting a respectful workplace is also a requirement.

Your day-to-day:        

  • Troubleshoot equipment operational issues by reviewing control logic and historian data.
  • Provide solutions in the area of advanced process controls with the intent to optimize processing facilities’ operation.
  • Work closely with operations and plant engineering staff, other Calgary based engineering disciplines, process specialists, environmental and regulatory personnel, lab technologists, etc. in troubleshooting and resolving plant operational issues.
  • Provide expert knowledge and advice on the process systems and equipment associated with the Christina Lake Regional Project (CLRP) in support of operations staff.
  • Provide process engineering oversight for the operations MOC process.
  • Perform technical and economic feasibility scoping studies on plant improvement opportunities.
  • Provide leadership and direction in establishing the process scope, technical requirements, and specifications for new projects that will be executed by MEG’s engineering contractors.
  • Review and approve the process design and documents developed in the engineering house including specifications, drawings, data sheets, etc.
  • Plan and facilitate process risk reviews for various plant operation issues and proposed modifications.
  • Develop plant testing plans and provide leadership to site operations and engineering with carrying out testing.  Either directly gather or facilitate the gathering of pertinent data.
  • Assist site operations and both Calgary and site-based engineering in the implementation of new initiatives or technologies.

What you will bring to MEG:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from a university recognized by APEGA.
  • Must be a registered professional engineer with APEGA.
  • Minimum 10 plus years related experience with an operating company.
  • Must have experience with advanced process controls, process optimization, distributed control systems, control system design.
  • Experience with DeltaV, PARCView, Pi Historian and other software required for data analysis and control system projects.
  • Strong communication skills; both written and verbal.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues and propose sound solutions.
  • Ability to bring both process engineering and controls engineering background to problem solving situations.
  • SAGD CPF operations background is preferred.

I find it STRANGE that they are looking for a CHEMICAL engineer instead of an ELECTRICAL engineer with a STRONG THERMODYNAMIC background !!!

This is my opinion only.
