Alberta has by far the largest deficit of any province, when will it decide to act responsibly and finance expenditures with taxation? Provincial Sales Taxes are a necessary evil, even the state of Texas has a state sales tax. Alberta is spending like to tomorrow and has relied on energy windfalls. Those days have ended. American Shale Gas/Oil production has allowed the USA to become the worlds biggest petroleum producing country. Albertas oil simply just cannot compete globally and while yes pipelines is a major contributing issue, it is beyond control of Alberta, environmental concerns mean nothing to most Albertans at this point. Meanwhile Tesla and others are banking on an energy transformation which is happenng before us. When Alberta starts acting responsibly which inevitably will be quite soon , Albertans will pay as much taxes or more than any other citizen and for years because Albertas deficit is completely out of control. Years of relying on oil have damaged the Alberta economy. Where is the money set aside to clean up the soon to be abandoned oil refineries? Where is the money set aside to clean up the soon to be abandoned oil wells? Where is the money set aside to clean up the tailings ponds from the oilsands? Where is the money set aside to clean up the heavy metals accumulating in Lake Athabasca? The truth is, that money was spent subsidizing zero sales tax and spending like money was growing on trees. Edmonton sold EPCOR, Alberta sold off most of the assets like this that were built up during the Peter Lougheed era and the era before him. What is left is an Alberta economy desperately addicted to oil and gas. What you are looking for is a scapegoat, while I agree with you about the bad deal that Alberta gets from the federation (it's really bad), the rules were set out long ago and the federation punishes those that do not tax their citizens. So while you're blaming Quebec it's unfortunate because you're actually off target.
