There will be a lot of work ahead.
There will be a lot of work ahead. As we see a lot has been done over the past 12+ years. Environmental reviews, the met mast measuring years of wind patterns. "When the voting had concluded in 2011, it was unclear whether the results meant the Haida Nation's support for the project will be abandoned altogether. The vote was only on the issue of whether the Haida Nation should enter into a business agreement with Naikun". (Daphne White-Old Massett resident) She believed there are other solutions than placing turbines in the rich fishing grounds of Hecate Strait. While others wanted to make sure the economic decisions are made by the Haida and not by outsiders. (Beryl Park) They also had concerns that the approval process didn't work properly. Some wanted a 5-6 year study before any project was to be considered. (Telell Waldhaus-Crab fisherman). Mayor of Massett (Barry Pages) asked-"How are you going to understand if there will be any impact on the crab fishermen without a baseline study?" These questions were asked of Matt Burns VP of Naikun in 2009. They still are relevant today. But now, Northland will have to answer the questions and do the studies. On top of all of this, the project has to be profitable and electricity sold at competitive rates. Can't just build anywhere. An EPA is required also, something which was elusive for 12 years. I think this wind project would the most complex the world has ever seen, given all the social, cultural, economic and operational issues involved. At this early stage, even an MOU would be great. It would show a willingness to engage in further discussions.
