Posted this on another board -- have to assume no one is interested or agrees or maybe there are no elderly people there. Oh well, will rant again:

I don't know about anybody else but I am an old guy - supposedly one of those in the vulnerable group although as far as I know I do not have any underlying conditions - and my biggest wish is that there would be a ton of more work done on therapeutics i.e. come up with something to fix the problem when it hits.

Testing is great, vaccines are great but when you get hit with this disease you need something to fix it. It's called medicine and at this point in time there is very little out there. The covid task team and the media keep saying what great progress they have made on therapeutics. What have they actually come up with? The big push was on Remdesivir - a very expensive drug with serious side effects and which has since been down played as not being as effective as they first thought. Also the second big push has been on Regeneron - another very expensive drug and also with limited applications and success. What else have we heard about that hasn't been trashed for political purposes? Dexamethasone - a repurposed steroid drug that's been around for many years and Vitamin D3, a supplement. Not a very big list. Last time I looked at the Health Canada site these two, Dexamethasone and Vitamin D were the only two items under the "approved" designation.

There are a few that are in "trials" with seemingly good results but they cannot get clearance until they go through months of trial data -- regardless of the number of deaths in the meantime. The urgency of the situation appears to be of little consequence. Warp speed is definitely not being applied to this particular faction in the battle.

To me, as an older person, particularly watching all this news about the seniors dying in the care homes, it is not because they're not being tested, it is not because they have not yet been vaccinated -- it is because there is no medicine that will fix them after they have been infected by somebody else, a situation they have no control of -- I would feel so much more secure walking out of my house if I knew that if for some unknown reason I was to pick up an infection they could give me something that would prevent my being intubated and then dying.

How about some warp speed on therapeutics and cut down on the rhetoric about the great job we have done.

Xmas is coming -- how confident are the grandparents for getting together with the rest of the family for that celebration - it's a pretty important family gathering and there are a lot of scared people - an available medicine/therapeutic would ease that fear a lot. Where is it?

My rant for the day!
