Historic Day for Cannabis
Historic Day for Cannabis Historic Day for Cannabis A note from our CEO, Jeff Yapp The momentum is clearly changing. We're experiencing an amazing moment for cannabis and are very encouraged by the recent passing of the MORE Act. We believe we're in the right industry at the right time. Cannabis is now at a place where there is a legal framework for either recreational or medical in all of the states except Idaho and Nebraska. In the U.S., approximately 98% of the adult population has some form of legal access to cannabis. In the States where cannabis is legal (either recreational or medicinal), we have witnessed over 250k jobs created and over $2b in tax revenue for states and local governments. The statement by the House in passing the MORE Act is a clear indication that the attitudes of Congress is aligning more with the general viewpoint of the American people. In talking with the Oregon Congressman, Earl Blumenauer, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is the executive sponsor of the MORE Act in the Senate. Earl believes that federal legalization would have an immense impact from a social justice perspective. The historic “War on Drugs” created a disproportionate effect on minorities in prison for cannabis offenses; which are now no longer illegal in most states. In addition to rectifying this troublesome issue, the MORE Act will also create employment opportunities for minorities in many states, such as California, which currently has unique social equity programs to help strengthen this initiative. Another positive news story this week was a United Nations commission vote to reclassify cannabis as a less dangerous drug, acknowledging the plant’s medical value and paving the way for further therapeutic use of the drug internationally. Earl and I talked about how in the U.S., the descheduling of cannabis does not have to be approved by the Senate. The possibility of an Executive Order would give both President-elect Biden and VP-elect Harris a chance to make a significant positive impact and correct some of the negative consequences from their previous actions surrounding cannabis and social justice. Sincerely, Jeff Yapp CEO
In a historic vote more than 80 years in the making, the House of Representatives approved the MORE Act, a bill that would end the federal prohibition of cannabis.
"We have experienced a record setting year as more people are discovering the health and wellness benefits that cannabis represents coupled with an increasingly broad age-range of consumers. The past year has a real impact on all of us, and new customers are discovering the unique benefits cannabis can address such as: stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, pain, etc. We particularly love seeing the impact we are having on our senior customers who are experiencing significant improvements in the quality of their lives," Jeff Yapp, Golden Leaf Holdings, CEO.
