Walter Aduviri regains his freedomThe Supreme Court finally decided to change the conviction of Walter Aduviri, reducing it from 6 to 4 years and changing "effective prison" for "supended prison". In a suspended prison the convicted remains out of jail but obligued to followe certain rules of conduct, including going to court once a month.
The question everybody is asking now is: will he be back at the regional government of Puno? Apparently yes, but not a sure thing. It would have to be decided by the electoral authority, the National Elections Jury (JNE is the Spanish acronym).

The Supreme Court of Justice declared the "Recurso de Casacion" filed by the defense of the Puno governor, Walter Aduviri Calisaya, founded in part and ordered his release, since it imposed a sentence of four years of suspended prison.
In this new context, Aduviri Calisaya will return to freedom in the next few hours, after being imprisoned since 2019, when he was sentenced to six years in prison and the payment of a civil reparation of two million soles for the disturbances that occurred in the Aimarazo in 2011.
Likewise, according to lawyers knowledgeable in electoral matters, Walter Aduviri would also return to the position of regional governor, despite maintaining a conviction for an intentional crime.
"Numeral 3, article 30th of the Organic Law of Regional Governments, says that in order to remove a governor it is required that he has a consent or executed conviction for an intentional crime with imprisonment", said lawyer Oscar Merma when asked about the theme.
In this sense, Aduviri would be in a position to return to the post of Regional Governor of Puno in the next few hours.
