RE:RE:Indonesia - Protests paralyze smelting activities One of the reasons I like nickel isn't just because of it's high leverage to cyclicality or it's emerging use as a key input for the green economy, it's that supply is becoming increasingly precarious.
Over the last 15 years or so virtually all the worlds demand growth for nickel has come from the Phillipines and Indonesea with other less stable countries like PNG and New Caledonia also seeing notable growth. This leaves nickel in a similar, albeit much less fragile, situation as cobalt.
With that supply growth in more unstable countries comes the risk of supply shocks and price volatility that I think many people are discounting. If (when) supply becomes increasingly tight in the future Sherritt stands to benefit as a stable producer in a stable country regardless of it's poor relations with the US.
