Taking mastocytosis for example, the growth , differentiation and survival of mast cells depends on stem cell factor (SCF) which binds KIT (CD117), a receptor tyrosine kinase expressed on the surface of normal and clonal mast cells. SCF is expressed on fibroblasts, melanocytes and others cells of the connective tissue and mucosal membranes, which have similar homing patterns as mast cells.
