Is the market maker strategy not desperate? Be honest

Is the market maker strategy not desperate? Be honest Is this not cheating a bit and last resort to hire a firm to make sure a computer robot doesn't "down tick" the last minute. How does Edward even know that's what's happening.

I find it very odd to take this approach and haven't heard of any other companies doing it. I just assume they could be spending their money more wisely elsewhere.
