This could be read as a negative.  If Plug kicked the tires on the technology back in 2016, and it worked famously well, then why didn't they just buy HyGear themselves?  

As a private company with a prospective offer to acquire from Xebec, you would have to think HyGear gave Plug the opportunity to counter the Xebec offer, especially if Plug and HyGear had a strong relationship.

That press release is too old to be relevant and is more concerning than anything.
