Good reference..
The essence of the problem is summed up quite nicely in the last few paragraphs...Alberta really hasn't got much choice....except to join the US. As a separate country the main problems would still exist....especially in terms of the oil and gas industry.
From a political point of view...Trudeau has little incentive to anything since the Province is staunchly conservative.....most of the older people in the Province still remember what his Dad did with The National Energy Policy..little Justin is carrying on this legacy.
This western sentiment (alienation) has existed almost since confederation...starting with Crow rail rates.....as a friend of mine from Sask used to joke...."If you put a railway man...a banker...and a grain elevator man in a barrel....no matter how you spun the barrel there would be a SOB on top!"
In terms of business....yes there will be some jobs lost in Alberta with KXL not going ahead....but as REE...mentioned a while back.....with TMX is being completed and the extra oil that will go through Line 3...there is some question as to whether KXL was ever really needed....the other two pipelines have more than enough extra capacity to cover the slack in current pipeline capacity taken up by rail...
And....in complete self interest..the cancellation of KXL is a good thing for ENB...
I agree whole heartily with your post but I need to throw in something that people are either missing or not believing it could happen.
Both in reference to the statement from Rex about the libs being greener than Kermit and other stuff we see happening such as Whitmore and Line 5, and other rebutes on Line 3 and of course BC on TMX.
I am on the fence as to whether these projects actually succeed based on not whether they are needed or not but rather something bigger at play behind are backs.
There is no doubt in my mind that there are discussions between parties, governments, countries on how best to not allow these projects to be completed. The kind of shadow planning we never hear about.
If they do succeed then haliueah, if for some reason they get stalled or wiped by executive order in the case of 3 or 5, then it would not surprise me.
If they get trashed, I would think the same response from our government to the XL project would be in line.
Now of course this would all be dependant on who is in the throne when or if it happens and the timing of our next election.
Trashing Line 5 before an election would be a severe blow to the current leader but may be beneficial for Canada in the short term. Sometimes people have to feel the pain before they figure out things.
I would also like to point out that when governments make decisions, it does need mean they know what they are doing.
This post is just food for thought...
