If you are only looking at the percentage spike in VIX on one day you are probably correct. But if you look at sligthly longer periods than 1 day there have been 3 periods since March that had around a 60% increase. On June 5 the VIX was $24.52 and it spiked to $40.79 on June 11 for a 66.35% increase. On Aug.17 Vix was $21.35 and it went up to $44.60 on Sept.3 for a 57.38% increase. On Oct.9 VIX was $25 and it went up to $40 on Oct.25 for a 61.12% increase.
