You are wrong learn to read a financial statement!  They also gained big on the Chorus side!  To compare it to the US airlines is stupid as the US gov just gave them money!  Canada decided to make the airlines pay employees rather than executives!  Air Canada on exit will be in deep for years.  AC and Chorus have been financing unencombered assets!  It is like puting a mortgage on your mortgage free home.  Remember AC has seen creditor protection before not there first rodeo!  Even AC says they will be 3 years and that is before the latest problems.  The industry as a whole is in deep sht.  If you understand anything about how business works the airlines that go into creditor protection will be the first to generate free cash as they come out the other side with little to no debt.  Not my first rodeo but seem to be yours!
