I don't believe that was so. Back then, KL was heavily influenced by their Chairman of the Board.
That would be ES.
And he believed easy gold was to be had. Lots and lots of it. He may have likely become a little disillusioned when he realized it wasn't as easy as his metal detector had detected.
And then ES retired , and was gone from KL. And then KL was gone from Novo.
That's fine.
