Weirdly, I don't actually blame the institutions here. Many of those guys are scumbags and it is their job to manipulate the rules of the game to their and their investors' advantage. I actually think that the root cause is the ability to trade on margin, I just don't think it should be allowed and the fact that it exists leads to all kinds of cancerous behaviors that ultimately create this kind of situation and lead people to absolutely ruin themselves in the process.

Being able to repeatedly mortgage something to extend your buying power and amplify your risk to an unlimited degree in the false belief that values only go up is exactly what happened in 2008. Then it was houses, now it is stocks. I smell The Big Short 2. Let's hope they close the LOOP before a lot of people get irreperably hurt.
