Have COVID-19 test, will travel.
Ichor Blood Services, a Calgary-based specimen collecting company, is selling lab-quality saliva COVID-19 tests that Canadians heading to the U.S. can take with them to use 72 hours before returning to Canada where they are required to have a negative test within that time period before getting on the plane.
Ichor CEO Mike Kuzmickas said for $250 (for tests from one to four people) plus $25 shipping, you can purchase the COVID-19 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, manufactured by Fisher Scientific, from them online and it will be mailed to your house before your trip to the U.S.
Or, as of Feb. 15, DrugSmart Pharmacy locations (there is one in Toronto Pearson International Airport) and Ichor Blood Services office locations will start selling them.
DrugMart is working with Ichor to also get vending machines set up at other Canadian airports.
“Transport Canada on their website has a list of approved facilities around the world or the United States that people can visit but it says right there, it’s on the traveller to find their own testing centre, get the test and get it done, which is extremely inconvenient and intimidating,” said Kuzmickas.
