Good question, first profits and losses in the OIL industry are not always reliable info , for instance, depreciation charges may be quite large due to past decisions . and in general,it costs much less to replace barrels now than even a year or more ago never mind years ago.
To invest in VET you have to work. calculate free cash flows , look at reserves, work in decline rates , ARO,and try to evaluate managements capabilities to make good investment decisions
AND that is just the start, you need a good grasp for geopolitics, weather, epidemics well you get the picture. 
At  the end of the day, it is your money that is on the line based on your analysis. Keep looking at any and all sources available to refine your analysis .Keep an open mind and Good LUCK !!
