Teck Resources Completes Additional Water Treatment Facility For Elk Valley Coal Operations

12:13 PM EST, 02/16/2021 (MT Newswires) -- Teck Resources (TECK-B.TO) on Tuesday said it commissioned an expansion of its Elkview Saturated Rock Fill water-handling facility, doubling the plant's capacity to remove selenium and nitrate from water at its Elk Valley metallurgical coal complex in British Columbia to 20-million liters per day.

The company said construction of the facility was completed late last year and it is now ramping up to design capacity. It is part of its implementation of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan to lower levels of selenium, nitrate, sulphate and cadmium in the river from its mining operations.

"The completion of the Elkview Saturated Rock Fill expansion is another important step forward in the implementation of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. We continue to make significant progress in advancing the plan and reducing selenium levels throughout the watershed," Robin Sheremeta, Teck's senior vice president, coal, said in a release.

The company said the plant removes 95% of selenium and nearly all nitrate from treated water. It has two additional water treatment facilities under construction at its Elk Valley mines.
