The manufacturing facility I worked at hired a guy from the U.K. as the plant manager.
He brought with him a group of engineers (6 in total) who had emigrated from the
U.K. to Canada, a couple of months prior to my hire date.
I have never worked with a group of people who complained more and worked as little as
possible. Lazy would be an understatement.
The only instance of overt racism that I have seen over my 35 years of working came from
these guys. The engineering group included a guy from Egypt and a couple from Asia.
It was almost like you were back in high school, given the pranks the UK engineers would pull
on the 3 non white engineers and the overt racist jokes they would tell each other in the
engineering office.
I worked in Finance and had a lot of interaction with the Engineering Department. The UK guys
were really just glorified draftsmen that would never have been hired if not for the plant
manager. The real engineers were actually the guys they would pick on.
Within the finance department we would joke the UK guys suffered from the "English Disease",
and assumed that the reforms of Margaret Thatcher had chased them out of England.
Fiddy although he is a Canadian, would fit in with these guys………… which is a sad statement.
The only good thing is that within 5 years they were all gone.
