as for norway, i think the people there have a practical view of o&g...no one there "loves" it, but they very much see it as a contributor to their country's properity. That being said, the fact that the oil industry is basically state owned (meaning that the profits largely help fund their fairly generous welfare state), probably helps reduce opposition. Any opposition on environmental grounds is less vehement, as both the economic benefits as well as environmental costs are seen as being "socialized" (the good balances out the bad).
In contrast, in Canada and the US, many who oppose fossil fuels see it as a problem of profits being privatized, while the environmental costs are being externalized.
