Avalanches

AvalanchesPeople who are killed in avalanches are invariably killed by either trauma or suffocation. Bodies have been recovered from as little as 2 feet below the surface. Often, victims have been known to have tunneled sideways, or even down. They are completely disoriented.
A survival technique for experienced alpiners is this. If you're ever buried in snow, create a cavity by moving your head back and forth. Then spit. Where the spit hangs tells you which way is up.
