Ferndale Port --Altagas Export TerminalFurther discussion on Ferndale.
The same arguments that lead to the construction of Ripet can be applied to an expansion of Ferndale. There is likely an immediate increase in propane exports from Ferndale to approach the nameplate capacity of the terminal. I would suggest that the majority of the propane exported is from Canadian production and very little from the US side. I find this odd that US producers are not using the Ferndale terminal. (exclude the refineries on either side of Petrogas).
Review:
Nameplate capacity: 50k bbl/day. Currently above 30k/yr.
Canadian export licence (Ferndale): 46k bbl/day . Required to export propane made in Canada.
US export licence ; not required if end user is cleared by state department.(?)
Ship Limitation: 48ships/yr. Wharf lease agreement with Whatcom county.
Partnership: Idemitsu 26% /Altagas 74%. Asia marketing arm and shipper. Idemitsu can find additional customers if volume is available. Altagas is the operator of the Ferndale port. Needs to find US producers that would ship propane and start looking at expansion plans.
Intalco smelter recently shutdown. Pier is no longer shared with Alcoa Intalco.
Ferndale community: Split. 50/50 half would favour good paying jobs. Half would favour no port or more limited shipping. Tough sell on any changes to the port.
