Edgewater Wireless Systems Inc V.YFI

Alternate Symbol(s):  KPIFF

Edgewater Wireless Systems Inc. is engaged in Spectrum Slicing technology for residential and commercial markets. The Company develops advanced wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) silicon solutions, access points, and intellectual property (IP) licensing designed to meet the service needs of service providers and their customers. Its physical layer Spectrum Slicing allows a frequency band to be divided, or sliced, to enable more radios to operate in a given area. Its silicon solutions are products delivering multiple, concurrent channels of Tx and Rx from a single, Wi-Fi standard compliant radio. Its Spectrum Slicing powered products are designed to address the needs of carrier-class, high-density Wi-Fi for both residential and commercial deployments. Its products are designed with its comprehensive, user- friendly and intuitive Element Management System-EdgeNet, that offers service providers with flexibility in configuring and independently monitoring each 802.11 channel in the network.

RE:RE:RE:I wonder

The 2nd NR was not an after thought but the company or its lawyers. It was a response to a bunch of shareholders emailing the CEO and asking WTF?

Hi Andrew,
It is not clear to me and many others just how the proof of concept was carried out in 750,000 homes. Obviously, YFI did not supply a physical piece of equipment to each home so how was this accomplished?

TriumphSpitSix wrote: The company had to put out that 2nd news release as a CYA maneuver (probably on advice of counsel) because the first one borders dangerously close on making false statements. Even in this latest NR they make every effort to imply (i.e., creating the impression without actually stating it because that would be a lie) that they performed this POC with real live Edgewater Wireless hardware devices.

But when you read a bit deeper into the language and realize the semantic gymnastics they are doing, it becomes clear they only used data collected from homeowners' existing single-channel APs and then applied some kind of computer simulation of "spectrum slicing" to get their numbers. Presumably it consists of some kind of mathematical algorithm to calculate a theoretical (and by definition speculative) improvement in the PHY rate supposedly attributable to their "technology" (more on that below). That part is unclear because they don't want you to know that it was just a computer simulation. What is clear is that they didn't install or use a single Edgewater Wireless wi-fi access point in any of these 750k homes.

Instead they used Edgewater's "next-generation technology," "multi-channel solution," "Spectrum Slicing architecture" or (my favorite) Edgwwater's "Spectrum Slicing implementation" but never its "access points," "devices" or "hardware" because they probably don't even have 100 physical devices, and certainly not 750,000 of them.

It's rhetorically slick (which is to say "crafty" and "deceptive") and it probably took them a few weeks to concoct the first news release but then they (or more likely their attorneys) realized how thin that razor's edge tightrope really is between "not stating a thing" and "affirmatively implying and creating a false impression of a non-existent thing" so they had to push out this new one.

Edgewater Wireless adds more substance in describing the tangible benefits its patented Spectrum Slicing technology

Next-generation of Wi-Fi technology creates significant interest

March 9, 2021 – Ottawa, Canada – Edgewater Wireless Systems Inc. (YFI; TSX.V) (OTCQB: KPIFF) recent press release created significant interest in its patented Wi-Fi Spectrum Slicing technology. This next-generation technology was demonstrated as a Proof of Concept (PoC) by a major Tier 1 service provider. These results were so outstanding and generated so much market interest that Edgewater Wireless decided to add additional information explaining how the results were achieved.

Firstly, results demonstrated that:

  • 75% of homes surveyed experienced 7 to 18 times performance improvements whilst the remaining 25% also realized gains.  Interestingly, houses with the most devices saw the greatest improvement. On average, 8 or more devices were connected at each home in this PoC trial.
  • Remarkably, the performance of a current single-channel technology used by todays Wi-Fi vendors degraded as each new device was added. In comparison, Edgewater’s multi-channel solution retains performance as devices were added.

The purpose of PoC was to compare the current physical layer single-channel architecture, offered by ALL today’s Wi-Fi systems, up to and including WiFi6E, to Edgewater’s patented, physical layer multi-channel, namely Spectrum Slicing. The major service provider compared industry-standard, dual-frequency, single-channel 802.11AC (aka WiFi5) Access Points to Edgewater’s Spectrum Slicing architecture configured in six-channel mode.

Carried out on 750,000 homes with over 6-million devices, the PoC provided a real-world view of a service provider’s residential Wi-Fi performance, including details such as aggregate throughput, number of connected devices and PHY rates[1] and represented a statistically significant sample size.

The PHY rate is acknowledged as the best means to determine real-world Wi-Fi performance in residential and business applications.  The PHY rate, or maximum association rate, measures the theoretical maximum physical-layer performance of a Wi-Fi connection.  Looking at the PHY rate, you can determine the maximum real-world performance possible on a Wi-Fi connection and understand the impacts on customer satisfaction.

Using the traditional Single-Channel Access Points in the home, data was captured from the live network and showed a direct correlation between PHY rate and the number of devices.  Each time a device was added, the clients’ Wi-Fi network performance declined dramatically due to contention on the single-channel physical medium.

However, using Edgewater’s basic, Six-channel Spectrum Slicing implementation, the client devices were evenly spread across six physical channels and, accordingly, a correspondingly higher PHY rate was enabled.  Simply stated, by merely distributing clients evenly across multiple physical channels, the contention is significantly reduced, and performance is not degraded.

The reality is Single-Channel Wi-Fi radio architecture has focused on improving a single physical medium’s efficiency without adding much-needed channel capacity.  Edgewater’s Spectrum Slicing is the most efficient way to add the required channel capacity and deliver maximum performance for the ever-increasing number of wireless devices.

“We hope the additional press release reinforces the information associated with this successful Proof of Concept. Once again, Edgewater’s patented technology is at the forefront of Wi-Fi,” Said Andrew Skafel, President and CEO of Edgewater Wireless.  “Moreover, the Proof of Concept used only simple load balancing to achieve the results illustrated above.  Indeed, adding additional patented technology, this can be further improved.”

Edgewater’s physical layer Spectrum Slicing allows a frequency band to be divided, or sliced, to enable more radios to operate in a given area. Think of Spectrum Slicing like moving from a single-lane road to a multi-lane highway — regardless of Wi-Fi technology.

Very curious they both showed up right as the company seemingly resurrects after half a year of dead silence. Coincidentally, that's plenty of time to get a P&D gameplan together and hire a couple of tools like these clowncars, if they were so inclined. One last cash grab before flipping the switch and "exploring strategic options?"

What do I wonder now? Well, I wonder why there is no news or deals or financing or, gosh, world peace.

But to the point. It's been two months since Handy disclosed this fabulous POC had happened. Obviously by this point they had had the results for some time. Let's say it was a month. So it's been 3 months they sat on the info.

So in this amount of time they couldn't put together a financing? No one was willing to pony up to support the tech that's 18x's better than the best the tech world has been able to deliver? Seriously, Plume can raise $270M from a single VC and Yfi can't raise $2M.

So, I'm speculating here, in order to be able to leverage this world breaking news the last option was a couple of 13% $100K loans? I mean good on them. Any port in the storm.  With the halt over they could break out the trumpets and here we are. In seven days the same news was released twice. Last week they got .12 out of the news. This week they got .025. It's hard to be excited by the same news.

Anyway, I know the baggies are all dreaming of the big deals that are cooking. But if they had any insight they'd be asking why dinner wasn't served long ago.
