When I was a kid I asked my older brother (who was almost old enough to be my father) why we still have pennies if they cost more to produce than they are worth?
He told me that they were in fact a strategic stockpile. If The Soviets invade West Germany, they first think we do is turn in all our coins and stat making shell casings!
