China has been stealing IP for years and now this......
I think those comments come before a good debate on the subject.
Yes there may be needs to get certain drugs to market faster - for that, hoping there is a way to share IP short-term and get assistance from others in a win-win scenario.
To simply just work around IP would be silly for government as it would stall development. There would be no insentive to spend money to develop new drugs if there's no carrot waiting.
Assuming they all come to their senses after some reflection.
From my understanding, the IP issue you're speaking of is strictly related to the covid situation. Basically the US is vaccinating at an incredible pace, while other countries like India, among others are suffering with large spikes in cases. So their idea is to allow other countries to develope their own vaccines using US company "ingridients", essentially to speed up the vaccine process worldwide, because right now everyone is at the mercy of getting shipments of vaccine from a handful of companies, i.e. Pfizer, Moderna, etc.
Basically these big pharmas would rather see people die than to release their patents and allow other countries around the world to develope the vaccines themselves
Hoping they don't want to see people die - but they do want to be compensated. A similar thing can be said about some of those countries and the policies they choose - are they willing to let their people die ? Sure there should be volume discounts, there should be profit sharing with those other groups that get involved and local governments are going to have to dole out some of those costs and responsibilities. Even wealthy countries and Pharma will need to come to agreements on bulk costs with respect to some of these other countries.
Just saying ... it can be done in a fair way ... if they get together and hammer it out. But it takes good communication to get there.
