I read a WSJ headline today that renewable energy battery storage will replace NG. I got curious. All my data comes from the EIA.
The spin:
-Battery storage provided over 580 MW of electricity in the US in 2018.
-By 2023 the EIA projects it will increase by 520%. Wow! Good bye fossil fuels!!!
Let me reverse the spin:
-In 2018 battery storage provided .07% of the US electricity demand of 1,220,000 MW. ( 2020 dropped to a COVID induced 1,117,445 MW)
-Rosy estimates increase that storage to 0.36% of our energy need assuming we don't use any more electricity.
We are going to need lots of lithium, copper, cobalt, etc. I'm sure that the 0.36 provided by battery storage of renewables will provide the energy to mine it (sarcasm).
