Strike risk rises at BHP's Chilean mines after contract rejection

May 14, 2021 7:46 PM ETBHP Group (BHP)By: Carl SurranSA News Editor4 Comments
  • A union representing workers at BHP's (NYSE:BHP) Escondida and Spence copper mines in Chile has rejected the company's final wage offer, raising the risk of a strike, Reuters reports.
  • The union provides control services to the mines from an operations center in the Chilean capital Santiago several hundred miles away.
  • A key sticking point in the wage talks is the workers' demand to be considered part of the productive chain and therefore eligible for production bonuses, the union president tells Bloomberg.
  • Escondida, the world's largest copper deposit, produced 1.19M metric tons in 2020, while Spence produced 147K tons.
  • The dispute comes as copper prices have soared, providing leverage to unions after hitting decade-long highs.
