RE:My email to OIGI sent this follow-up email to the responsible author of the report:
Dear Ms. Frontz:
I have read your report:
AUDIT OF CLAIMS FOR MONTHLY RENTAL OF NONINVASIVE HOME VENTILATORS
How unfortunate that you have taken only an accounting lens in how you have broadcast your findings because it will have the effect of causing many unnecessary deaths and increased hospitalizations.
You concluded that some procedural rules were not followed in the billing. What do you do with that information? You extrapolate it from strictly an accounting perspective and issue a report that is intended to scare people away from this kind of treatment despite the increasing recognition that it will serve to prolong lives and reduce health care costs.
Why did you not handle your concerns in a professional manner instead of just making the loudest noise that you could from strictly an accounting lens? You could have recommended a modification in CMS billing codes, prescribing words or patient data collection.
I do think the mandate of the OIG to have the effect of causing many unnecessary deaths and increased hospitalizations.
I suggest that you issue an addendum to mitigate against the severe damage you have caused.
