RE:Cielo is late to the gameI emailed Cielo to ask just how their technology differed from the others (or what it is that sets them apart from the rest) and forwarded the post itself as there were some valid points raised, this is the reply I received:

Thanks again for forwarding me this post. We definitely have lots of inquiries from investors, wanting to compare us to the other renewable fuel producers in the market. The truth is, we need every single company working on renewable fuels now, to stay in the game and grow as exponentially as possible, so it’s tough to refer to any of them as “competition”. I attended a renewable aviation fuel seminar today, that admitted that the total supply of renewable aviation fuel in 2020 didn’t satisfy even 1% of what will be needed for all the airlines to hit their carbon neutral targets in the coming years.
We have looked at most of our competing fuel producers quite well, and while everyone has their own way of processing feedstocks into fuels we still feel ours is in fact unique to all of them. With the examples provided in that post for instance, many of them are still in lab/experimental stage so can’t be called a commercial process as of yet. Many of them, while they will say that they hope, or expect to have their process work with multiple feedstocks, are still using primarily plastics as their trial feedstocks. Plastics are still not classified as a renewable energy feedstock, and as such the fuel from them cannot be classified as a renewable fuel. With our process, we can mix plastics in with our renewable feedstocks (at about 15% blend maximum to keep our renewable fuel classification), and have already bench-scale tested over 60 different waste streams for feedstocks. There are others taking landfill wastes and converting to fuels or other energy sources, but we aren’t seeing them converting specifically to renewable diesel and jet fuel as of yet, with a process as similar or economical as ours.
It’s definitely a highly competitive, and highly complicated field we are in, so there will always be comparisons made based on the basic information provided by the company. Upon deeper look, the differences between each will emerge, and Cielo will still stand out as one of the best solutions in the emerging and fast growing waste to energy industry. We see a bright future for all of the other companies, and wish them all prosperous paths, but we are confident to lead the way along that path.
