RE:RE:BW Messina - Departed FerndaleJust catching up on some of the "news".
I was watching BW Messina on the 30
th of May. You can use the track feature in the Vesselfinder S/w to look at the last 24 hours if the vessel is within the AIS window . BW Messina left mooring on the 30
th of May and travel about 2 NM south of the wharf and anchored there . About 4 hours later BW Messina returned back to FERNDALE and continued loading for the next 20hours. The tugs remained by BW messina at all times while the Vessel was not moored.
I have seen this behavior before. VLGC Captain Markos (late April) did the same routine.
I am unable to verify but I believe what is happening is BW Messina and Captain Markos were preparing the ship for loading Butane . It must be a safety procedure to leave the wharf….. so both the Ferndale plant and Vessel prepares for the butane transfer. All the transfer piping/manifolds must be cleared of propane and the temperature stabilized to that of liquid butane.
The ratio of butane to that of propane found in oil refineries is about 1: 8 . So we would see a butane loading on the 3
rd vessel after BW Messina.
Butane pricing remains strong . Butane pricing is normal 10% higher than Propane.
I should also add that Propane FEI pricing remains strong with the Sept 2021 contract at 580 usd /tonne. This is an increase in contract pricing since my last report.
I would add one further thought. Since demand remains strong….. Vessels are getting harder to contract for shipment and the lease rates for the Vessels are high. This is why RIPET mooring date intervals have been increasing lately over the last few months.
