It reacts with the copper oxide and unfortunately the carbonite which is present. The reaction with the carbonite gives off CO2 which dissolved in water under pressure forms carbonic acid.
Carbonic acid dissolves copper. When you see copper on roofs and gutters turning green it is caused by carbonic acid being present in acid rain. Sorry metal, anyone can google and confirm the above statements.
