Digby, these are good lines: "Unfortunately, it seems that many people are driven solely by the pursuit of their individual rights while totally disregarding the collective right of the others in the communities where they live. When individual rights absolutely subordinate the collective right, how is there to be any trust between neighbours? Is there a point at which pursuing your individual rights permits you to break the law? This has nothing to do with socialism. It has everything to do with living in a society of safety, trust and harmony, one in which personal entitlement must have some limits so that people can comfortably co-exist."
Trimmer, just wanted to say you can also use Pascal's Wager to describe the choice you're talking about. It's valuable too in debates about climate change. A proposition can be true or untrue, and the consequences can be nill or catastrophic.
Propositions: Covid is deadly, and vaccines are the best prevention.
The vast majority of independent scholars in epidemiology believe these propositions.
Nevertheless, if they're wrong, the worst that can happen is that a lot of time and money gets wasted. If they're right, our duties are laid out for us.
