My guess is some people sold off after the break of 4-5th May lows, forced for short sellers or just by panic looking at the decreasing gold price. 

EQX on TSX shows a massive buy at market close which is typical of ETF rebalancing action. EQX on AMEX shows distributed selling in the last hour that is not typical of ETF rebalancing. Furthermore the volume for the day on AMEX doesn't match total intraday volume.
