the short interest is not extraordinaily high, but when average daily volume is +/- 500K-1M shares per day, a buyback of 5MM shares would most certainly cause some upwards momentum in the stock price. it doesn't have the same liquidity and depth as large cap stocks which is a factor I think you're ignoring here.

WELL is also a roll-up and consolidator so any M&A news could also trigger some very quick short covering, which of course would contribute to a spike in the share price.

it's not a huge factor, but just another one of many catalysts for WELL shareholders who are long.
