Antibe Therapeutics Inc(Pre-Merger) ATBPF

Antibe Therapeutics Inc. is a clinical-stage biotechnology company. The Company is leveraging its hydrogen sulfide (H2S) platform to develop therapies to target inflammation arising from a range of medical conditions. The Company’s pipeline includes assets that seek to overcome the gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Its lead drug, otenaproxesul, is in clinical development as an alternative to opioids and NSAIDs for acute pain. Its second pipeline drug, ATB-352, is being developed for a specialized pain indication. The Company also focuses on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Otenaproxesul combines a moiety that releases hydrogen sulfide with naproxen, a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug. ATB-352 is an H2S-releasing derivative of ketoprofen, a potent NSAID commonly prescribed for acute pain. Its IBD candidates are being designed to maintain the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetic properties of ATB-429.

In the case of Otenaproxesul, you're obviously wanting the pain killing properties of Aleve to persist - No?

I'm no patent expert. I'm just having a hard time with the idea of tagging an H2S molecule onto someone else's NSAID, and calling it your own. I can't imagine Nuance putting up $20MM if this wasn't do-able.

I'd like to buy, and don't mind waiting, but this is a pretty basic question I'd like to get answered before I jump in.

I have looked into ATE's patents as I was curious what they entailed.  This is what I came up with, at least as far as I understand them. For what it's worth.
 
Antibe's patents are based on three components: a base drug, an H2S releasing compound and (to a lesser extent) a medical indication (eg, OA).  It takes an off-patent drug (NSAIDS to date) and combines it covalantly (shares electrons) with an H2S releasing compound based on a formulation which it developed, and  which is the meat of its patents. I believe it has identified approx 30 recipes to date. ATB-346, 352 and 340 all use the same linking compound (4-hydroxythiobenzamide (TBZ)).  The American chemist is investigating others for use with mesalamine as a possible IBD treatment. Dan has engaged a Canadian doctor to look into other drugs/indications for future consideration.
 
Aleve is simply a brand name for naproxen, and naproxen is off patent, as are all the drugs with which ATE is currently involved. So no patent issues to worry about now or in the future as long as Antibe sticks to its game plan.
 
The potential candidates for further drug development is huge.  Here is a short list from one of ATE's patents.  I especially like the last part:  "and the like".  :)
