Winpak Ltd. is a Canada-based company, which manufactures and distributes packaging materials and related packaging machines. The Company’s products are used primarily for the packaging of perishable foods, beverages and in healthcare applications. The Company operates through three segments: Flexible Packaging, Rigid Packaging and Flexible Lidding and Packaging Machinery. The Flexible Packaging segment includes the modified atmosphere packaging, specialty films and biaxially oriented nylon product groups. The Rigid Packaging and Flexible Lidding segment include the rigid containers, lidding and specialized printed packaging product groups. Rigid containers include portion control and single-serve containers, as well as plastic sheet, custom and retort trays. Midard... the $3 special dividend declared by Winpak is a windfall for its shareholders. However, this declaration does have a drawback, which is a usual reduction in the share price for the same amount of the special dividend.

I suspect the special dividend was declared because Winpak is experiencing exceptionally strong company earnings results and the company wants to distribute the profits directly to its shareholders.

Btw, it would be prudent to hold your shares directly after the dividend payment... if you sell your shares at the lower price you obviously cancel out the benefit of the special dividend.
