Midard... the $3 special dividend declared by Winpak is a windfall for its shareholders. However, this declaration does have a drawback, which is a usual reduction in the share price for the same amount of the special dividend.
I suspect the special dividend was declared because Winpak is experiencing exceptionally strong company earnings results and the company wants to distribute the profits directly to its shareholders.
Btw, it would be prudent to hold your shares directly after the dividend payment... if you sell your shares at the lower price you obviously cancel out the benefit of the special dividend.
