RE:U.S.-Canada border has reopened, but many still stranded
While some US Representatives are calling in Canada to follow the science and open its border to Americans, it's important to remember that last year the US took the explicit decision of hogging PPE and vaccines - leaving Canada scrambling to secure PPE in China and vaccines from everywhere (less the US), at high human and economic costs. Now that we're finally sticking our head out of the water, after having convinced Canadians to get fully immunized (currently roughly 80+% first dose and 35+% 2nd dose and rapidly increasing - I tend to agree that "...many Canadians will cheer on an extended closure of the border to Americans especially now that the Delta variant is apparently surging among unvaccinated Americans, and it appears there are places in the U.S. where high numbers of people are rejecting the idea of getting vaccinated." Until 80+% eligible Canadians get that 2nd shot in the arm - should be done by end-August - I certainly see no rush to open the floodgates, especially given Delta (and potentially subsequent variants) are increasingly affecting younger less or unvaccinated (i.e. under 12s) populations. Although waiting does have an economic impact, it certainly has the prospect of being less than the hardship we've had to go through. So I'm more than happy to wait it out, even if it prevents a US Rep from jogging on our beaches and buy Beaver Tails.
