So the biggest reason why there is no demand for petroleum engineering at my alma mater is that the majority of the chemical and mechanical engineers get jobs in oil and gas, just like all of the petroleum engineers. The difference is that a petroleum engineering degree can essentially only be applied to jobs in the oil and gas industry, whereas chemical and mechanical engineers can work on oil and gas and many many other indistries. It's hedging your bets, and why wouldn't you do that, putting all your employment eggs in one basket sounds a little foolish, and the companies in downtown Calgary will hire a petroleum, chemical, or mechanical engineer for any job right out of school (be it in reservoir, D
&C, production, or facilities engineering disciplines. Although there is definitely a shift away from oil and gas in the mentality of some students, there is still a need for young engineers in oil and gas.
