Qualcomm Flight RB5 5G Platform — the world’s first 5G- and AI-enabled drone platform
The Qualcomm Flight RB5 5G Platform is a development platform that developers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can use to build drone and flight applications based on the Qualcomm® QRB5165 System-on-a-Chip (SoC). The QRB5165 SoC supports autonomous flight using 5G cellular technology and the 5th generation Qualcomm® Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engine. See the drone design in action in this video.
Interest in drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is accelerating rapidly, with continued adoption and market growth expected throughout the next decade.
Qualcomm Flight RB5 Platform combines heterogeneous, low-power computing and camera systems with AI, and long-range connectivity such as 5G, and Wi-Fi 6 to bring together the unparalleled power of 15 TOPS with advanced imaging capabilities and drone-to-drone communication.
Qualcomm AI Engine handles complex tasks which include computer vision, perception, and autonomy for a transformative imaging experience.
Advanced AI equips 4K and 8K drone cameras with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), horizon leveling, and digital zoom for film-like image capturing capabilities, while computer vision brings multi-object detection and tracking, digital gimbal techniques, and depth cues from stereo vision for easy control of any shot.
Advanced camera features include electronic image stabilization (EIS), horizon leveling, and digital zoom, providing jitter-free imagery from far distances while maintaining a small form factor.
High-quality photography coupled with AI and deep learning capabilities can allow for smooth autonomous flying and faster recognition of potential problems to facilitate quick analysis at the edge. 5G enables low-latency and high bandwidth data transfers for cloud computing and big data analytics.
With the addition of 5G and Wi-Fi 6 long range communication, plus premium AI, computer vision and camera features, Qualcomm Flight can unlock brand new experiences for drone flight.
Qualcomm just put out an article on Nexoptic's ALIIS and have been working on implementing this software for close on 2 years, not doubt ALIIS would have to be part of the Flight RB5 5G Platform.
Developers: What’s next in image processing at the Edge with NexOptic (qualcomm.com)
NexOptic recognized the need to improve image data right where it’s captured. At the edge, on mobile and IoT devices. As a result, they’ve developed ALIIS (All Light Intelligent Imaging Solutions), a suite of ML-based image enhancement algorithms. ALIIS is used to enhance and correct flaws in images provided by a device’s camera and ISP, on a pixel-by-pixel basis, making high-quality image data available for downstream camera pipeline processes.
ALIIS is effectively a software ISP between the camera and subsequent downstream elements of the camera pipeline on mobile and IoT devices.
ALIIS is AI for AI, since its ML-based algorithms can be used to clean up data for computer vision models that may run downstream in the camera pipeline.
NexOptic takes advantage of the Qualcomm Spectra ISP, which provides the camera data, and complements it by running ALIIS on the Qualcomm Hexagon DSP. They build their models with TensorFlow, and then use the Qualcomm Neural Processing SDK for artificial intelligence (AI) to quantize and convert the exported model into the Deep Learning Container (DLC) format that is optimized to run on the Hexagon DSP.
NexOptic is solving a unique problem. By using ML to enhance image capture in real-time at the device edge, downstream camera processes can work with significantly higher-quality image data.
ALIIS can be applied to other sectors, including smart security, mobile, automotive, AR & VR, medical imaging, and industrial automation.
